intake/diagnostic assessment

This is when we’ll start to get to know each other and make a treatment plan.

  • This usually takes 1-2 sessions. During this time, I’ll ask you questions about yourself, your life, and your symptoms. My goal is to get to know you and understand what you’re looking for from therapy at this time in your life.

  • If you’re using insurance to cover therapy, then I will also be making a diagnosis based on your symptoms and our conversations. I use the DSM-V and DSM-V-TR to assess symptoms, as well as your own understanding of your symptoms.

Diagnoses can change throughout treatment as we learn more about your symptoms and as you feel better. I think it’s also important to mention that diagnosis is fairly subjective—a different provider may assign a different diagnosis to your symptoms.

I like when the diagnostic process is collaborative and transparent. So I welcome your input and questions. If you’d rather not know your diagnosis, that’s okay too!

individual therapy

These are all the sessions after the intake/diagnostic assessment. It includes talk therapy and/or EMDR.

  • Sessions are 53 minutes. During that time is when we “do the work,” so to speak. We’ll talk through topics that are important to you and help you develop new skills.

  • In-person sessions are available (weather and health permitting), as well as HIPAA-compliant telehealth sessions if you’re in Minnesota.

EMDR

This stands for: “Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing therapy.”

  • EMDR is an effective treatment for a variety of concerns, including trauma, depression, and anxiety. Essentially, EMDR helps people 1) remember distressing life experiences without reliving them, and 2) see themselves in a more positive light. EMDR can be used in combination with regular talk therapy sessions, so no need to feel like you have to choose between one or the other.

    For more information about EMDR:

  • The first step of EMDR is to get to know each other and discuss the experiences that have shaped your life. From there, we’ll spend several sessions working on coping and regulation skills that help prepare you for “reprocessing sessions,” which is when we go deeper with your distressing memories.

  • A lot of people wonder how long EMDR takes. In my experience, 2-3 EMDR sessions per memory with 3-4 sessions of history-taking and preparation beforehand.

  • That’s something we can determine together. Generally speaking, it’s good to do EMDR when your life is feeling relatively stable and when you have strong coping and regulation skills.

I am working toward becoming in-network with most major insurance plans. If you don’t see your insurance plan listed above, you may inquire with your insurance company to find out if your plan offers reimbursement for out-of-network providers. If so, I can provide you with a receipt to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement.

good faith estimate

You have the right to receive a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your medical care will cost.

Under the law, health care providers need to give patients who don’t have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services.

You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency items or services.

Make sure your health care provider gives you a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least 1 business day before your medical service or item. You can also ask your health care provider, and any other provider you choose, for a Good Faith Estimate before you schedule an item or service.

If you do not have insurance or we are out of network, we have a Patient Election to Self- Pay form, that will include the cost per session that you will sign prior to your first session. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill.

Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate. For questions or more information about your right to a Good Faith Estimate, visit www.cms.gov/nosurprises or call 800-985-3059.
